Press statement | 02.10.2018 International Children’s Week Children's Week The Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as previous, this year also point to the significance of marking the International Children's Week, a traditional international event aimed at directing the attention of adults to the importance of ensuring the enjoyment of rights for every child in Bosnia and Herzegovina, without discrimination, while respecting the principles of the best interest of the child. The basic prerequisite for ensuring the rights of the child is that the competent authorities, first and foremost, the legislative, executive and judicial authorities base their activities on the principles established by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and not only in marking significant dates. In accordance with the above, the Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina invite the competent authorities as decision-makers to take into account whether this decision will affect any child, whether that decision takes into account the best interests of the child, whether the child's development right is covered by this decision, and whether the children have the opportunity to express their opinion on the issues that concern them, and whether it was taken into account. In this context, it is worrying that more and more children are being used for political purposes, to fill the media content through various reality programs. The Ombudsmen invite the competent authorities to act urgently, by adopting regulations that will ensure the prevention of child abuse. Ombudsmen express particular concern over the position of children as victims of torture, including domestic violence, as well as children in conflict with the law, and for this purpose have made a "Analysis of the situation in institutions where juveniles are in conflict with the law in Bosnia and Herzegovina" , and the report on the implementation of the recommendations given in this document will soon be presented to the public.
