Press statement | 17.11.2017 European Day for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, November 18 Children, Illustation The Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina use the opportunity to point out the importance of marking the European Day for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, bearing in mind that the problem of sexual abuse of children is a serious challenge that does not have adequate treatment in our country. In the opinion of the Ombudsman, the knowledge of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, ratified by Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2012, is not at the satisfactory level, although education was organized by official institutions and NGOs for representatives of secondary schools, health and judiciary, and justifies the question of how many representatives of other institutions are familiar with the Convention? Starting from the fact that every form of sexual abuse represents a painful and traumatic experience with the consequences that are destructive to the health and psychosocial development of the child, the Ombudsmen are of the opinion that the society as a whole should take much more to prevention, which requires good organization and above all responsible behavior of all those in charge. In doing so, the Ombudspersons are aware that for a real improvement in the field of child rights and judiciary, a child's pro-active approach is needed and that a number of different measures are needed. In this regard, the Ombudspersons welcome the decision of the Government of the Republika Srpska to establish a register of pedophiles for a higher level of protection of children, which is an activity that was insisted by the Institution of the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
