A regional conference dedicated to fighting human rights violations

Organized by the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of the Delegation of the European Union, the Council of Europe Office and the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, a regional conference was held in Sarajevo on Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 February 2018 titled: "Exchange of best practices in resolving human rights violations with a special focus on combating discrimination".

The main objective of the two-day conference was to exchange best practices among national human rights institutions throughout the region, and to strengthen the cooperation of these institutions in the prevention and fight against human rights violations.

In the introductory part of the conference, participants of the Ombudsman Institution for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina were welcomed by the Chairperson, Nives Jukić. The Ombudsmen from the region and the Ombudsman of Turkey, as a special guest, participated in the work of the panel entitled "The Experience of National Institutions for the Protection of Human Rights in Judicial and Administrative Procedures", within which Ombudsman dr. Jasminka Džumhur presented the experiences of the Ombudsman Institution for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the further course of the conference, a panel discussion gave a review of the academic community and judiciary on the role of national institutions for the protection of human rights in judicial and administrative proceedings, and the position of the non-governmental sector on the role of national institutions for the protection of human rights in judicial and administrative proceedings.

The conference was attended by ombudsmen and representatives of human rights institutions from Montenegro, Croatia, Kosovo *, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as representatives of the judiciary, the academic community and civil society organizations.

The event was organized within the framework of the project entitled "Strengthening the Ombudsman for Human Rights in the fight against discrimination", which is part of the joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Instrument for Support to the Western Balkans and Turkey".
