Press statement | 05.06.2019 World Environment Day Environmental Protection, Illustration On the occasion of marking the World Environment Day, on June 5, the Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nives Jukić, Prof. dr. Ljubinko Mitrović and dr. Jasminka Džumhur emphasize that the right to a healthy environment is one of the fundamental human rights (third generation), which must be achieved by all countries by undertaking systemic measures. The Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina recall that every individual has the right to a healthy environment, but also the obligation to care for and promote it. In this way, ecological awareness develops and draws attention to the consequences of certain human activities, such as pollution of air, water, soil and forest destruction, which endanger the entire life on the planet. The issue of the environment and its protection is also a necessary topic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as evidenced by the growing number of citizens' complaints to the Institution of the Ombudsman on the basis of violation of rights in this field. The Ombudsmen point out that in practice there are cases of violations of guaranteed right to a healthy environment, although in Bosnia and Herzegovina there is a good normative and institutional framework for the protection of the environment. One of the important conventions ratified by Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Aarhus Convention, according to which citizens have the right to accurate information on phenomena and activities that can have an impact on the quality of the environment, human and animal health, their right to participate in decision-making in the development of plans and programs dealing with the environment. The Ombudsmen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as members of the Ombudsman Network in the area of environment and human rights, hosted the meeting on "Environment Protection - Role of the Ombudsman", which in Banja Luka, in addition to members of the Network, gathered in February this year also representatives of relevant Bosnia and Herzegovina authorities, academia and non-governmental organizations active in the field of environmental protection. The goal of the Network is to establish more intensive cooperation among the members, exchange knowledge, know-how and experiences, as well as positive practices, further develop the forms of reaction of the Ombudsman in the field of environment as well as joint action and mutual support in the performance of the Ombudsman's mission in the field of environment. On this occasion, the Ombudsmen also appeals to the authorities, companies, NGOs and individuals, to the extent possible, to contribute to its preservation.
