Press statement | 31.08.2021 Best wishes for the beginning of a new school year Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina The ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Professor Ljubinko Mitrović, Jasminka Džumhur, PhD, and Nives Jukić would like to extend their best wishes to all students, parents and education workers for the beginning of a new school year. The ombudspersons extend their warmest congratulations to first-graders, wishing them happy schooldays and hoping that starting school is the beginning of all the great things their childhood will be filled with. The ombudspersons support the return of students to the classroom and of 45-minute classes, as it is important for children to be at school, not only as a place where they acquire knowledge and skills, but also as a place where they are reared, where they spend time with their peers and socialise, and where they exercise their children’s rights. The ombudspersons would like to remind that in the past period they commended the measures taken by all competent education institutions to complete the 2020/2021 school year, and would like to express their firm belief that schools are safe for the return of children and teachers, if we all follow the clear guidelines issued by the competent bodies. The greatest responsibility lies with headmasters and headmistresses who must ensure that all requirements are met for protecting the safety and health of children in schools and assess the risks, as well alert to any difficulties that are to be removed. At the same time, the ombudspersons would like to send out the message to students that, in addition to acquiring knowledge, it is important for them to listen to their teachers and parents when it comes to staying healthy since they need to take care of themselves and others because of the coronavirus pandemic.
